September is National Preparedness Month

The annual Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1-Nov 30. It is important that everyone take a moment to ensure you, your family, extended family, loved ones, and/or community neighbors are as prepared as possible for hurricane season. Because we have an annual threat in hurricanes, we should also capitalize on that state of readiness for all other emergencies.

Take a moment to be sure you and your loved ones are on the same page about hurricane season. Your family may not be together at the onset of a disaster, so it is important to develop an emergency plan before disaster strikes. The plan should include a communication plan, a disaster supplies kit or go-bag, and an evacuation plan.

  • Talk about how you’ll evacuate, in case you need to.
  • Include who will come with you, where you’ll go, how you’ll get there, and what you’ll take with you. Don’t forget to include your family’s special needs and your pets in your plan.
  • Read more about emergency go-bags and what to put in them below
  • Make a plan to shelter at home, too.
  • Remember that you could lose power, so plan for at least 3 days’ worth of supplies.

Please take a moment to refresh yourself on bag preparations. Dr. Murphy often gets asked about his plans and how he prepares. This year, Dr. Murphy and the CAEPH team made a go-bag video. Dr. Murphy explains here why he chooses a particular bag and what he considers to store in it. This is not meant to be comprehensive. Dr. Murphy often emphasizes that go-bags, in his opinion, are a combination of daily comfort items and backpacking/hiking in the context of preparedness. These bags are not meant to mimic a military tactical bag or a survival bag for months at a time. Go-bags or bug-out-bags are pre-packed emergency bags containing essential supplies for survival and comfort in the event of a quick evacuation due to a disaster, such as a wildfire or severe weather, such as hurricanes or flooding. These bags should be easily carried and stored pre-packed in an accessible location, containing necessities to help you navigate a crisis for at least the first 72 hours.
