What is a field placement?

A field placement is a placement of a student in a public or nonprofit health agency or organization, particularly one serving underserved areas and populations, to work on a discrete public health project. This placement should provide structured opportunities and/or experiences to allow the student to apply acquired knowledge and skills in a public health practice setting. Field experiences are expected to contribute to the mastery of public health competencies, with a focus on balancing the educational and practice needs of the student with the needs of the community. Field experiences should culminate with a deliverable of a poster presentation or scientific report that must include the following sections: abstract, introduction, methodology, findings, conclusions and discussion.

Eligibility
  • One must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen U.S. national, or foreign national holding a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States.
  • One must be enrolled in a health profession graduate program (MPH, MSPH, DrPH or PhD program) at a CEPH-accredited school or program of public health.
Compensation

Students who will complete a Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center-approved student placement will receive a $3,500 stipend at the end of their project.

Stories of Impact

Since the initiation of my project at a community health center serving a primarily Hispanic population in Tulsa, OK, pap
smear rates there have significantly increased. HPV vaccine rates are also trending upward. The impact of this project on
Tulsa’s Hispanic community will hopefully continue to grow after the completion of my practicum through further
recommendations I have made to the center.”

‘The data I collected in my project will help in more accurate estimation of Hepatitis C in Native Americans, an underserved population.’

‘This project will highlight the lessons learned by participating organizations in the PHAB accreditation process. Each organization has unique features and may have encountered different strengths and challenges from the process which will be useful for other Oklahoma health departments who have participated in the PHAB accreditation process.’
